Looking for Opinions
We are thinking about adding a puppy to our family next spring or summer. We will probably go with a rescue puppy which will most likely be a mixed breed. If not, we will go with a lab or a golden. So,here is where I would like your opinion. Rescue or pure-bred and why? Lab or Golden retriever and why? What color lab? I've heard black are the smartest, then yellow, then chocolate. We kind of like chocolate. If it is a mixed breed, it will be a lab or golden mix. Is there a certain mix you would not recommend? Thanks. I can't wait to hear some responses.:)

We have a Golden Retriever named Mikey. He is absolutely the best dog we have ever had and he is awesome with kids! Caleb can climb all over him and pull his ears and Mikey just lays there. He also plays with Caleb all the time when they are outside. He loves water so Caleb will stand in his kiddie pool and scoop up a cup of water and throw the water in the air and Mikey will jump to get the water. It's hilarious! He also tries to bite at bubbles when we blow them. He listens very well and is the sweetest dog ever! I've heard labs are also good with kids but we have never had one. Golden Retrievers are known for being the best family dog.:)

Well, you asking the wrong person because I am involved in rescue and all of my fur babies were shelter or rescue dogs :) I've fostered before too. Is your dog going to be an indoor dog, I assume so because winters will be awful cold where you live. Is shedding a problem? Are you committed to brushing every day? Are you committed to walks and lots of exercise? Labs will not need the brushing as much as a retriever. Labs are more high energy, but they are very playful. I have always wanted a golden retriever, but I can not do the grooming they need. They are supposed to be so smart. We have right now a beagle/bassett mix(personally the most perfect kid dog ever) and a havanese. The beagle came from a shelter and the havanese from a rescue. The havanese was raised in a rabbit cage the first 1.5 years of his life :( Good luck in whatever you choose. Petfinder.com is where I found both of my dogs. You can put in your zip and it will lead you to the nearest rescue or shelter.
My doggie is a guiding eyes release dog. He's a black lab and he is the sweetest boy! He was great with my sister when she was little. I loooove black labs. My uncle has a golden and he's got some hip trouble.
Do NOT get a goldendoodle (poodle x golden retriever). They are good smart fun dogs but a grooming NIGHTMARE. I wish someone would have told me that before we got 2 of them... I really like goldens, love their personalities etc. Not a big fan of Labs though... Ive rarely seen an adult lab that i liked... they seem to always be over weight and have help issues like tumors etc.. But that's just me. We have 3 rescue dogs and 2 of them are pure breds ( australian sheperd and a Boston terrier the other one is a german sheperd mix that I've had for 13 yrs! we have 5 dogs....). So you don't have to choose between rescue or pure bred, you can even find pure bred puppies at rescues. Do a google search for " Golden retreiver rescue {your state}" and contact them to put in your application and when a dog that matches what you want comes available they will contact you. :) Good Luck!
my only comment is chocolates are the cutest and short haired dogs are better than long haired and rescuing a dog gives you a warm feeling in your heart forever. ok-that was three comments--
I have had them all. Love them all for different reasons. I'm part of a golden rescue group. They have lots of wonderful dogs. Just do your homework and see where you are led. (sort of like adopting children, eh?)
They all shed, even my labradoodles. They all make great pets and they all have boundless energy the 2 years of life before some mellow.
Maybe a rescue of a 2-4 year old dog. Just make sure they are good with kids, as some rescues come with some baggage that might not be a good mix with kids. THere are lots of good smaller dogs that are good with kids and pretty sturdy too.
Good luck
